Thanks to the link from Burnt Orange Report, we have gotten a lot of hits today about the city council race in place three between Gregg Knaupe, Jennifer Kim, Mandy Dealey and Margot Clarke. To elaborate more on what I said in the last post, while I think Knaupe has asserted himself as the front runner now, by no means does that mean I am predicting he will win. I think it is likely he will lead going into the runoff though and after that . . . its all a turnout game.

Is Knaupe the Frontrunner In Place Three?

Its starting to appear that way. With big time endorsements from the Police and EMS Workers and the Austin Central Labor Council, it appears Gregg Knaupe has assumed the position of front runner in the race to replace Jackie Goodman in Austin City Council Place Three. Margot Clarke had been the presumed front runner for months, but Knauppe's endorsements, coupled with an effective campaign, show that he may just win the seat. But it won't be without a runoff. I don't know who will win this, but I am willing to bet that Knaupe will make it to the runoff. Any takers?

Strama to Headline Young Democrats Fundraiser

Via BOR, word from Texas DNC committeeman David Holmes is that state Rep. Mark Strama (D-Austin) will be giving the keynote speech at the Young Democrats fundraiser. For all I know, this may have already happened. While it may not seem like a big deal, Strama definitely deserves this recognition for running a great campaign. He is the future of the Texas Democratic Party.

Markos thought Atrios had found some funny satire about Bush's social security plan when he posted this quote:

For example, how benefits are calculate, for example, is on the table; whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There's a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those -- changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be -- or closer delivered to what has been promised.
Does that make any sense to you? It's kind of muddled. Look, there's a series of things that cause the -- like, for example, benefits are calculated based upon the increase of wages, as opposed to the increase of prices. Some have suggested that we calculate -- the benefits will rise based upon inflation, as opposed to wage increases. There is a reform that would help solve the red if that were put into effect. In other words, how fast benefits grow, how fast the promised benefits grow, if those -- if that growth is affected, it will help on the red.
Okay, better? I'll keep working on it.

Sadly, this is not a satire. Bush really said this in Tampa, Florida yesterday. He decided not to learn about his plan and now he is just making shit up.

Deep Throat To Be Revealed?

That's the word. John Dean says that Deep Throat is dying and that Ben Bradlee, former executive editor of The Washington Post, has already written an obituary. So, who could it be? I have a few ideas. Anyone know what the current health of Fred Fielding, Mark Felt, Leonard Garment, Gordon Strachan, Ronald Zeigler, William Ruckelshaus, Richard Odle and Raymond Price. That's right, I have eight top suspects who I believe could be Deep Throat. My research hasn't been very thorough, so I could be missing something that would automatically disqualify some of these people. Fielding and Garment don't seem very likely, but I still put them on there. So, who do you think Deep Throat is? Leave it in the comments. Any tips on the health of these people? In Omaha to pick his social security privatization to the public (and try to pressure Senator Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) into voting for it), Bush had this exchange with a single mother. From The Washington Post and Eschaton:

In Omaha on Friday, a divorced single mother named Mary Mornin tells the president, "I have one child, Robbie, who is mentally challenged, and I have two daughters."

"Fantastic," the president exclaims, and he tells her she has "the hardest job in America, being a single mom."

Later, the 57-year old Mornin tells Bush that she works three jobs, which the president deems "uniquely American" and "fantastic." He asks her if she gets any sleep.

What the fuck is wrong with this man? We should remember, in the future, not to elect presidents who enjoy making fun of single moms. The only reason Mornin's sad story is "uniquely American" is because Bush has policies that are destructive to single mothers. I am honestly worried that when he said "Fantastic" he really meant it. Why should we have to analyze the fucked up things presidents say to single moms?

Its Not Looking Good for Rose Spector

With 67% of the precints counted, Republican Joe Strauss has 63.8% and the Democrat Rose Spector has 32.7%. I have no idea which precints have been reported thus far, so there is a chance, albeit a small one (unless all the Democratic precints haven't been counted, than its a decent chance), that Spector can come back and get Strauss under 50%. But its looking like, despite a valiant effort on Spector's part, Joe Strauss will be the next representative from District 121.

Stay with The View from the Left later tonight for updates on the results and come back tomorrow morning for analysis on the race.

Rose Spector for State Rep

Donnie Fowler's biggest supporter, the Chairman of the ASDC Exec Committee, is now bound by ASDC laws to vote for Dean. Its all falling in place for the Governor. And I couldn't be happier.

Howard Dean Picks Up ASDC Endorsement

Just a day after Donnie Fowler was talking dirty about his endorsement (since when is 8-out of-19 qualify as an "endorsement"??), Howard Dean slapped young Donnie back to reality with the big endorsement thus far: The Association of State Democratic Chairs. There is thorough coverage of the endorsement at Dean's website, DFA. Also today, Dean was endorsed by Wellington Webb, who, in endorsing the Good Doctor, dropped out of the race. Webb had been strongly supported by the state party chairman of Colorado, who also threw his weight behind Dean. Webb was also endorsed by Al Sharpton, but Al -- who had some well documented run ins with Dean during the primary debates -- has yet to make a new endorsement. This makes Dean -- even after Fowler's trash talking yesterday -- the true and clear front-runner. Jerome of MyDD says "Dean will be the next DNC Chair, and he's going to unify the Democratic Party." I sure hope so.

Fowler Gets ASDC Exec Com. Endorsement

Wow. This is a surprise. Byron of BOR points out though that we really don't know what the impact of this endorsement will be. The Association of State Democratic Chairs Execuvite Committee is only twelve people, and the Chairman of the committee is hard core Donnie Fowler supporter due to Fowler's days last year managing the Kerry campaign in Michigan. After the endorsement, in an interview, via MyDD, Fowler said "Inevitability is dead, just like it died in 2004," a not so subtle allusion to Howard Dean's collapse in the 2004 Democratic primaries. I like Donnie Fowler, but I will be quite upset if Howard Dean is not elected DNC Chair. Unfortunately, if Dean doesn't win, its probably the end of his political career. No matter who you are, its hard to lose two elections (even one as arbitrary and undemocratic as DNC chair) and live to run for another office. Let's hope no matter what happens, both Dean and Fowler (and Frost, Webb, Leland and even the liberal blogosphere's most wanted moderate Tim Roemer) are able to help build the party in their own personal ways. I still think Dean will win; this endorsement hasn't changed that at all. What has changed is that this is, at least it appears to be, a three way race: Dean (still the frontrunner), Frost (the anti-Dean) and Fowler (essentially the Dean-wannabe). By the way, as reported by MyDD, the executive committee vote was not unanimous, so there's clearly not a tidal wave of support for Fowler, though it seems to be much more substantial than most were giving him credit for. Personally, I am still waiting for Simon Rosenberg to make his move. If Dean can't win on the first ballot, than Rosenberg will become a top tier candidate, as he is the second choice of a large number of both Dean and Frost supporters. One thing's for sure ... this thing is going to be interesting. February 12 is getting closer and closer, so expect the endorsements to begin to pour in.

Finally, Stephen Yellin (Mr Liberal of DailyKOS fame) has a new post on 2005 and 2006 races on his blog, the Yellin Report. It is definitely worth checking out.

Newt in 2008?

Don't laugh. Well, you can laugh, but then you may want to cry, because it looks like he may actually do it. From BOR, Newt Gingrich has organized Meet Ups in fifteen different cities ... thankfully, Austin is not one of them .. not yet at least. Unfortunately, our central Texas brethren Killeen (one measely member, hahaha) and neighbor to the east Houston have joined the Newt-astic Revolution. When the Draft Mark Warner people contacted Meet Up to set up a Warner Meetup, they were told that the 2008 Meet Ups had not started yet. Now, Newt tries to hide the intentions for his Meet Up under the veil of his new book (I would state the title here but it was unremarkable after looking at it for a few seconds that its name currently -- and hopefully eternally -- escapes me), but that is all bullshit and everyone with half a brain -- and let's give Newt the benefit of the doubt on that one -- knows it. Meet Up was a great tool for Dems this year, but are they acting biased?

GEPAC: Generation Election PAC

I am doing some work with a new, not even officially formed, PAC called "Generation Election." They have some great ideas to get young people involved in progressive politics and will do it by supporting young, exciting candidates for offices from school board to the U.S Senate. They are taking donations already, here is their Mission Statement:

The mission of Generation Election is simple: to get more young Americans involved in the political process. GEPAC will also devote resources towards supporting young candidates for political office in the United States. Students and young people interested in the political process will be able to sign up for GEPAC and then be paired with a GEPAC sponsored candidate in their area. GEPAC sponsored candidates, ideally, will be found from candidates for the United States Senate all the way down to school board. To take back this country, we have to start at the grassroots. We have to "build our bench": get young, capable candidates in political office where they can gain valuable experience, while at the same time building a vast grassroots organization of young people, who will gain experiences that will help them change the world.

Austin City Council Outlook

Its more than 3 months away, but candidates are already lining up -- and running strong -- for Austin City Council. Earlier, it looked like we would have two tough races. Now, with perennial candidate Jennifer Gale the only opposition for environmentalist Lee Leffingwell, it appears the only real race (sorry, Jennifer) will be in Place 3, with Gregg Knaupe, Jennifer Kim, Mandy Dealey (who lost to Ann Kitchen in the Democratic Primary for State Rep District 48 in 2000) and the annointed front-runner Margot Clarke, who lost to current Councilman Brewster McCracken in a run-off in 2003. There's no way Clarke can pull this off without a run-off. I look for either Knaupe (who is excellently qualified for the council post having worked for the Texas Hospital Associationor and orchestrating last year's Healthcare District victory) or Kim to join her in the run-off, with Clarke probably winning in the end. But, we are still three months out (the election is in May) so everything could change ... and it probably will. As the election grows nearer, stay with The View from the Left for constant updates and analysis.

Taking Back Congress

Chris Bowers of MyDD has the blueprint to do it. Bowers sets the goal for 2006 to target 80 GOP-held seats. Obviosly, we won't win all of them. Hell, we will be lucky -- very lucky -- to win 10 of them. Personally, I don't think this is as much about taking back congress in 2o06, because, in all likelihood, that won't happen until 2012 at the earliest (but that doesn't mean I won't bust my ass to make it happen in '06). What targeting so many races is about is building the party. That's what we got to do. We have to build it in every state, not just the swing states. We have to build it in Rhode Island the same way we build in Ohio and the same way we build it in Texas. If this sounds familiar, its a lot of what Howard Dean has been talking about in his quest for the DNC Chairmanship. I have supported him from the beginning, and continue to do so.

By the way, Sirius Radio is very good for liberals. I mean very good. It has Air America plus another station called Talk Left which features the likes of Ed Schultz, etc. And no ... I don't work for Sirius.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is running for Governor next year (at least it seems) and we need to sh0w her that the people of Texas don't support the confirmation of Alberto Gonzales. Call her office and tell her she will lose your vote (even though, if you're reading this blog, you probably were never going to vote for her anyway) the second she votes to confirm Alberto Gonzales. This is the kind of Roveian trick that is fun every once a while ... but only every once in a while. Have fun ...

Its Time to Say "No" to Gonzales

DailyKos brings up a good point. As Alberto Gonzales is poised to become the next Attorney General of the United States, we truly are at a crossroads. Do we vote "yes" and confirm Gonzales or do we vote "no" and, while he still may be confirmed, send a message?

If you have seen the pictures of Abu-Gharib and heard the horror stories of Guantanamo Bay, I don't know how you could vote to confirm Mr. Gonzales. He is, to borrow a phrase the Republicans became fond of during the election, "unfit for command." Confirming Gonzales will be to show the world that we condone the behavior at Abu-Gharib. As the United States attempts to rebuild its image -- abroad and, sadly, even at home -- we cannot turn our back on the man who is as responsible for the Abu-Gharib horrors as any Bush Administration official.

That's why I urge you all to call your Senators and present to them a case as to why they CANNOT vote to confirm Alberto Gonzales.

Let's start standing up for what we believe in and what is right. Let's be Democrats again. Let's be Americans again.

When Will Mark Strama Run Statewide?

That's the question Greg wants to know. And he's definitely not the only one asking it. Strama ran a great race in a Republican district against a Republican slime ball. Now, as the Statesman points out, he will be a voice of moderation in a State Leg that has its share of crazies. Let's hope Strama runs statewide soon, but not soon enough so he doesn't have a chance to leave a mark in the legislature, where he will no doubt excel.

Smoking Ban on Ballot in May?

That's the word around Austin. Political consultant and former state Representative Glen Maxey, a great guy and a great Democrat, is leading the effort to collect the signatures neccesary to get the initiative on the ballot. Assuming they get the needed signatures, we will have quite a May election shaping up. With a t ough election between Gregg Knauppe, Mandy Dealey, Jennifer Kim and, the front-runner, Margot Clarke (who lost in '03 to Brewster McCracken in a run-off), it will be a great diversion before '06 primary rumors get in high motion. I for one can't wait.

Also, for all you Austinites out there, protest the coronation of King George II by going to the Capitol at 4pm for a, well, a protest. I'll be the one with a sign.

I got mine on Friday. There pretty cool. Express yourself; let everyone know you are True Blue ... and you don't have to wait until the next election to do so. The wristbands are like Lance Armstrong's "Live Strong" bands but they are blue (yeah, no shit) and say "True Blue" (who would have thought?). They are going for 2 for $5 and 5 for $10 and selling hot ... so buy now.

By the way, I am not getting paid anything to plug these wristbands (if someone from True Blue is reading this though, I sure would like to be getting paid). All the proceeds go to Mercy Corps.

The New Enemy of MyDD and Kos: Andrew D. of BOR

This shit is getting so ridiculous. Apparently from what I understand, earlier today, Andrew D. of The Burnt Orange Report wrote something attacking Kos and Jerome Armstrong of MyDD about the whole disclaimer issue. Loyal Kossacks and MyDD-ians have responded viciously. When Andrew responded to one post by saying, "weare all on the same side here", a MyDD member replied, "You're not on my side." Of course, it probably didn't help that Andrew earlier wrote that the MyDD phrase should be: "MyDD- As Honest as Sean Hannity." The problem also began because Andrew failed to put a disclaimer (oh the irony!) at the beginning of his post stating that he worked for the Texas Democratic Party. This shit is really getting ridiculous

Condi Rice Confirmation Hearings

I am watching it right now. She seems to be handling herself very well. The biggest curveballs have been from Democratic senators Barbara Boxer, Joe Biden and no other than a fella from Boston named John Kerry .... that's right, Kerry has made his post-election debut in the senate with a few good questions for Rice. Once again, she has handled herself well, even going as far as telling Boxer (who asked some tough, tough questions ) not to question her integrity. Stay tuned for more live blogging.

Radnofsky Officially Enters Senate Race

BREAKING NEWS & EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: HOUSTON--Barbara Ann Radnofsky (D-Houston) made it official Monday that she will seek the Democratic Party's nomination for U.S. Senate in 2006.
Radnofsky, 48, officially declared her candidacy today after sending the necessary paperwork to the United States Senate formalizing her intentions. Candidates for U.S. Senate are required to file a declaration of their intentions with that body. Radnofsky mailed the documents today after formally incorporating her campaign committee with the Texas Secretary of State late last week. Radnofsky is the first person in Texas to formally declare their intentions regarding a 2006 run for any position.

Though Radnofsky has taken the necessary steps to formalize her candidacy at the federal level, she won't be able to officially file for the Texas Democratic Primary until December of this year.
Radnofsky first came up on the political radar last year, when she began an exploratory campaign. Most Texas Democrats were first exposed to Radnofsky during the Texas Democratic Party's State Convention last June, where she held a meet-and-greet and delivered a speech seconding the nomination of State Party Chairman Charles Soechting, a longtime friend, for a full term as the head of the party.
In an exclusive interview with this writer Monday night, Radnofsky said she was excited to launch her campaign, which she says is a grassroots effort that will focus on issues important to the people of Texas.

Kos has already called the article today's "must read", so definitely go check it out. Sullivan attempts to uncover the reason why, among other things, after going 0-7 in presidential elections, Bob Shrum was still fought over by John Kerry and John Edwards. Democratic consultants, as portrayed by Sullivan, resemble the mob. The sad part is that she probably isn't too far off. Its time to reform the Party.

Moore: Democrats should nominate "our Arnold" in '08

In New York to celebrate the New York Film Critics Cirlce award for Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore spoke to Hollywood Democrats like Nora Ephron (famous writer-director and ex-wife of Carl Bernstein) and Faye Dunaway, among others, telling them to expect Jeb Bush to run AND win in 2008.

But the biggest surprise from Moore came when he saidWho's our Arnold? [Republicans] run people who are stars. When we run people who are stars - rock star Bill Clinton, movie star John Kennedy - we win. Who wouldn't vote for Caroline Kennedy? Who wouldn't vote for Tom Hanks?"

Moore has been recently quoted pushing his Hanks idea, along with a possible Paul Newman candidacy. One Hollywood actor (and Democrat) who had showed interest in running for President was Warren Beatty, though that was some time ago. If Warren Beatty ran for president, he would have my vote. How could you turn down Clyde Barrow?

Despite Democrats' Effort, Bush Carries Electoral College

It was over. You knew it. I knew it. And if us two know it than you can bet everyone else knew it too. But it wasn't official until today. When Congresswoman Stephanie Tubb-Jones succeeded in enlisting the help of California Senator Barbara Boxer, it helped to shine much needed light on all the horrible things that happened in Ohio on Election Day. I am convinced it wasn't fair, but I am not 100% sure that it was enough to tilt the election. Honestly, that is pretty irrelevant. Its not about overturning the election. Its about democracy. That's what the Republicans don't understand. This is not a Republican victory, and it sure as hell isn't a Democratic (big D) victory. Its a victory for Democracy, or so I hope that it is. We can't have shit like this happening in America. How can we have elections in Iraq when we haven't yet mastered them in our own country?

The vote against the Democrats' challenge was 267-31 in the House and 74-1 in the Senate. That is truly dissapointing I wish we had more lawmakers that did what was right.

Dems Already Lining Up for 2008

Bush hasn't even been inaugurated yet and us Democrats are already trying to figure out who are next candidate should be. I, for one, do not have clean hands. I too have submitted to the temptation of presidential politics .. albeit almost four years before Election Day 2008. I have started doing volunteer onling organizing for the Draft Mark Warner movement. Mark Warner, of course, is the young Governor of Virginia who has an approval rating above 60%.

In the latest issue of Newsweek there is a fascinating interview with John Kerry about the election and his future. I think Kerry has handled himself pretty well post-November 2. Many people within the party remain loyal to the Junior Senator from the Bay State, and so his is a name that has to be brought up when the conversation turns to the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary.

I read recently (can't remember where) that -- and this is three years out, remember -- right now Kerry and Hillary are the presumptive front-runners. At this time last time around, it seemed like either Gore or Lieberman were the obvious choices. So much for conventional wisdom.

Besides Kerry, Clinton (that's Hillary, not the Big Dog), my personal favorite Warner, there are other candidates, many of whom are very impressive people.

Besides Warner, my top pick is probably Joe Biden. He is just a great guy who I really admire, and the Democrat who has the most credibility on national security and foreign policy issues.

You also have presumptive candidates like Bill Richardson, John Edwards (though it will be hard now that he doesn't ... well .. have a job), Tom Vilsack (he will make the Iowa Caucuses irrelevant ... and that's a good thing) and Wesley Clark (assuming the General decides for another shot, which is obviously no lock .. nothing is a lock three years out from the first primary); along with potential candidates like Russ Feingold (similar to Dean, but it will be harder to label him a "liberal" like they did to the Good Doctor), Tom Dashcle (believe it or not, he wants to run), Barack Obama ('12 or '16 seems more likely, but you never know), Ed Rendell (he has said he is running for re-election, but he could always make a late entry), Harold Ford, Jr. (he has already announced an '06 senate run, so this is beginning to seem unlikely), Kathleen Sebelius (made some noise as possible Kerry VP, could help in the Plains), Mike Easely (Governors from the South -- Democratic ones that is-- are hard to come by) and I'm sure I am forgetting someone .. perhaps the eventual candidate him or herself. But it is forty six months to Election Day and I already can't wait to take my country back. Onward to 2008!

Morrison to Take Another Crack at DeLay

Via The Burnt Orange Report, there is news that Richard Morrison, who got more votes than any previous challenger of The Hammer (Tom DeLay), " all but announced another run at Tom DeLay in 2006 in his fundraising email yesterday" (words from BOR's Byron). I think this is great. We need to challenge Republicans wherever they may be. This year, with Morrison's strong challenge, DeLay was finally forced to spend money on his race. But as much as I love Morrison causing my least favorite congressmen headaches, I would like to see him in a race eventually that he can win. Not to say that Morrison can't win against DeLay ..... its just highly improbable. But if DeLay keeps screwing up (and chances are that he will) and is actually held accountable for his outrageous ethical violations, than Richard Morrison may have a chance. But whether he does or not, we as Democrats should be there with him. It takes a brave man to stand up to someone like DeLay. It takes a even braver one to do it twice.

Kirk and Ickes Out of DNC Race

Former US Senate candidate from Texas and former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk and Clinton aide and Media Fund director Harold Ickes have both called it quits in the race for DNC Chairman. Ironically, neither Kirk or Ickes had even officially declared their candidacy, though both were openly and actively seeking support. The only official candidates right now are Donnie Fowler, former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and Martin Frost. After dropping out, Kirk endorsed fellow Texan Frost. Ickes, however, made no endorsement. I was a fan of Kirk and would have liked to see him finish the race. Interestingly, the story of Kirk and Ickes dropping out was carried on the AP wire and picked up in the Austin American Statesman, adding to the surprising amount of media attention the DNC chair race has gotten thus far.

Has Donald Rumsfeld Forgot The Heroes of 9/11?

Donald Rumsfeld may be over 70 years old, but even his elder age is no excuse for forgetting a key detail of the 9/11 attacks. When Rumsfeld made a "surprise trip" to Iraq on Christmas Eve, he referred to Flight 93 -- the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania only after the heroism of the passengers of the flight ("Let's Roll") -- as having been "shot down."

Mr. Secretary, that plane was not "shot down." Men and women who redefined American patriotism and heroism insured that Flight 93 did not reach a target that was presumed to be in Washington, D.C., perhaps even the White House. How can you forget these American heroes, Mr. Secretary?

What is Harold Ford doing?

He has already announced he is going to run for the U.S. Senate in 2006, and clearly has ambitions for higher office (such as the presidency). But Harold Ford should know better than to say shit like this if he wants any future in the Democratic Party. Seriously. Joshua Micah Marshall gives Congressman Ford a Holiday Smackdown on TPM. The point is that social security is an issue that Democrats should own, and we have in the past, and there's no reason to think that we won't in the future ... unless good men like Ford continue to act like jackasses. I am usually impressed and inspired by Ford, but if he continues this behavior than he will lose me completely. If you don't support social security, you are pretty damn close to a DINO (Democrat in name only). It would be understandable if Ford, who is trying to position himself for a statewide run in a conservative state, to be against other Democratic issues such as gay rights, abortion, etc. Marshall makes that argument as well. But why abandon us on social security? That is the question that we should be asking Harold Ford, Jr (D-TN). Here is (via Eschaton) is Ford's contact information:

We Got Lucky in WA (not like we don't deserve it after 11/2/04)

John Kerry and John Edwards easily won Washington State on November 2. It wasn't close, despite promises by the Republicans -- most notably "The Dick" Cheney -- that the GOP would make a real push for Washington's electoral votes. In the end, they did not. Nor did their Senate candidate, the touted "giant killer" George Nethercutt, who did horribly against Democratic incumbent Patty Murray. Now if Murray won by double digits and Kerry won comfortably, than why did the incumbent Attorney General Christine Gregoire have her victory margin be less than the number of people in her family? She was running against novice politico Dino Rossi, and Gregoire seemed to be the likely favorite since Washington is a blue state. But Gregoire ran a bad campaign, and Rossi ran a good one. We won this one (if you haven't heard, its all but official) but we really didn't deserve to. Let's hope Governor-elect Gregoire can run a state better than she can run a campaign. I, for one, will be rooting for her to suceed.

Christmas Musings on DNC Chair

From the beginning of the DNC Chair race, even when the candidacy of Howard Dean was a mere dream (or a rumor, or a nightmare ... depending on who you are), he was my choice. About a month later though, I am not so adamant. Granted, Dr. Dean is still my first choice for the DNC Chair post, but he is not the first and only choice; not anymore at least.

In the last few weeks, several other attractive candidates have emerged. One, former Mayor of Dallas and 2002 Democratic nominee for US Senate in Texas Ron Kirk, is a very familiar face. He should be the junior senator from Texas right now, if there was any justice in the world. Sometime early last month I learned that, in fact, there was no justice in the world. So that makes sense now. Kirk would make me proud as DNC Chair, which is more than I can say of many of the other candidates. Jerome Armstrong of MyDD rated Kirk highly in his "Cattle Call" from the ASDC meeting in Orlando, making one think that Kirk could be in the process of acquiring the Big Mo.

The other candidate who is looking pretty good to me is Donnie Fowler. One thing that stands out immediately about Fowler is that he is the only candidate who is running a real campaign: i.e. posters, buttons, etc. He even has a website. Any Deaniac would certainly appreciate the URL address of Fowler's campaign website: www.ChangeTheParty.com. If Fowler is genuine in his distate for the current ideas and leadership, than he would make an interesting Chairman. Though he is relatively young, he is not inexperienced, having worked in high posititons on both the Kerry and Gore campaigns.

So put me down as a Dean supporter who would be able to keep the vomit down if Kirk or Fowler was chosen. In all seriousness, I think we have three solid candidates who have the ideas and leadership to move our party forward. Let's hope so.

And don't get me started on Martin Frost and Molly Beth Malcom .. sheesh ... no wonder they call us "losers" ...

My Favorite Three Albums of the Year:

College Dropout by Kanye West. This album is amazing, it really is. It has some really powerful tracks, including the popular Jesus Walks. Kanye West understands and knows what he is rapping about, and I look forward to his second album.

The Revolution Starts ... Now by Steve Earle. This album will go into the time capsule for 2004. It sums up the feelings all of us Democrats were feeling last summer (when the album was recorded): when everything felt possible, everything felt urgent and everything felt important. All those feelings were right, but not all of them were fulfilled. Pop in Earle's CD and it will take you back to a simpler time before W's 2.0 was about to begin.

Genius Loves Company by Ray Charles & Friends. Ray Charles would be smiling at the reaction from his last album, which features the talents of stars like Van Morrison and Norah Jones. The best track on the album is Crazy Love with Charles and Morrison. Crazy Love makes the album worth its $13 bucks alone, but the rest of it ain't too shabby either.

SPORTS
Coach of the Year (any sport) : Dennis Franchione, Football, Texas A&M. Coach Fran took a 4-8 team that lacked discipline and turned them into a solid 7-4 team that came within a touchdown of beating OU and played Texas a good game. Three of the Aggies four losses were against top six teams (the other against Baylor). Fran's coaching job in 2004 is one for the ages. Good job, Coach.

Team of the Year (any sport) : UConn Basketball Teams, Men & Women's. Winning both the men and women's NCAA championship is a feat we will not see done again unless Texas Coach Rick Barnes can get his team together this year. We will see.

Athlete of the Year (any sport): LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers. Two years ago he was in high school, and now he is on the brink of becoming the NBA's best player. Two years ago the Cavs were bottom-dwellers, now -- with James leading the way -- they are the East's second or third best team. Way to go King James on saving the NBA.

The Absolute Worst Idea ... EVER

That's what I think about the latest DNC chair draft movement. This time, people (who are these people) are trying to convince Molly Beth Malcolm, the former Chair of the Texas Democratic Party to run for DNC Chair (via BOR).

Well, let's look at the facts. First of all, no one disputes that Molly Beth is a nice woman, a good Democrat (though she used to be a Republican, I won't hold that against her), and someone who does her best to help Democrats win. The problem is that, while she was TDP Chair, Texas Democrats were 0-32 in statewide races. That's right: 0-32. We also lost seats in the Texas House every year she was TDP Chair. New TDP Chair Charles Soechting has done a better job than here, and other candidates to replace her, like Garry Mauro and Garnet Coleman, would have been improvements over Molly Beth as well.

This is a bad, bad idea. And I think people know that. She was practically run out of the Texas Democratic Party Chairman's office ... I find it hard to believe that she will be taken seriously at the national level. That being said, the AP has written an article about it, so who the hell knows. I sure don't.

End of the Year Awards: Part I

As the year winds down, and Christmas weighs upon us, I find it neccesary to look back on the year that was. For many of us, those who supported John Kerry and thought that hope was on the way, this year ended on a sour note. November 2, 2004: a day which will live in infamy. I am serious. We, the American people, made a choice that will live -- and thousands of our brave men and women will die by -- with. It was the wrong choice.

The last twelve months have been overwhelming to say the least. It started with Dean's scream in Iowa and ended, well, it hasn't quite ended yet. I'm willing to bet something else happens in the last two weeks of 2004. Maybe another Bush nominee will drop out (sorry Kerik, but I'm not really sorry) or another Democrat will hint that he is thinking about throwing his towel in the ring for 2008 (a new, kinder form of Joementum: Joe Biden 2008).

Whatever happens, we will not be surprised. We have seen it all in 2004, and we have lived -- most of us -- to see 2005. May you have a great holiday. Best Blog: DailyKos. What can I say that has not already been said? Markos himself is a fine writer and a keen political observer, but it is the community, I mean Kossacks, that make DailyKos what it is. Some of the best writing I see on the internet is on Kos diaries, and I'm not kidding. Let's hope they keep it up in 2005.

Best Texas Blog: The Burnt Orange Report. This was one of the first blogs I ever read. It was October 2003. I didn't really even know what a blog was, and I stumbled across BOR. Since then, it has grown considerably. Its biggest break so far has been the "is Rick Perry gay?" rumor, but that certainly has not come to define BOR. The site is a consistently honest blog that features several writers, most notably Byron L and Karl-T. Though all BOR writers do a good job, these two seem to be the standouts. Funniest Blog: Wonkette. If you know politics, aren't afraid of laughing, hate Republicans (or at least dislike them), than you will probably laugh out loud reading Ana Marie Cox's Wonkette. To be blunt, it is hilarious. They did a great job on the 2004 election and have continued their humor in a hazy, post-election world with great success. There's no reason why it won't continue well into 2005.

Funniest Political Book: AMERICA: THE BOOK by the Daily Show. Go ... buy it ... now. I would tell you more, but I don't want to ruin it.

Best News Website: MSNBC. For awhile, I hoped this was our answer to Faux News, but it certainly isn't impartial. You see my friends, it isn't the media that is Liberally biased. Fuck no, they have been moving to the right since Clinton got into office. No, it is the truth that is Liberally biased. As long as MSNBC, with top dog Keith Olbermann esposing knowledge and throwing down GOP bullshit, reports the truth, than there's nothing to worry about.

Worst News Website: FOX NEWS. It looks like a damn tabloid. And the writing is similar to the quality of that of a tabloid as well. "Wonderful" writers like Carl Cameron (the guy who said Kerry was a metrosexual) always have something to say, though it usually is completely ridiculous and often times just plain incoherent. The bullshit needs to stop, cause its starting to smell bad.

Best News Show: -TIE- COUNTDOWN w/ KEITH OLBERMANN and ANDERSON COOPER 360. Both newsmen know their shit. They have a clear passion for what they do, and seem to be continually searching for a big story. They, unlike many of their colleagues, do not look like they can't wait to get home and go to sleep. Olbermann is constantly cracking jokes, but unlike the always smirking Aaron Brown, Olbermann is actually funny. And I mean very funny. Cooper has the potential to be the star of CNN, and I would argue he might already be it. As Olbermann's ratings go up and Cooper takes on the Christian Right and almost comes out to say he is gay, they will both have huge 2005's, and they both richly deserve it.

Worst News Show: YOUR WORLD w/ NEIL CAVUTO. This show is just fucking embarrasing. It really is. I only have watched it a few times, and only to laugh in Cavuto's face. I first watched it during the Iraq war when Cavuto -- who doesn't know shit about war and doesn't know shit about anything really -- interviewed military expert after expert asking the same stupid ass questions that you would expect from someone named Neil Cavuto. I can only hope Your World with Neil Cavuto will be canceled in the next year.

Best Fake News Show: THE DAILY SHOW w/ JON STEWART. What else?

Biden 2008?

Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) says he is "going to proceed as if I'm going to run" for President in 2008. If he runs, I will probably be for him. Besides Mark Warner and Wes Clark he is my favorite potential candidate (though I have a special place in my heart for future DNC Chair Howard Dean). He is the Democrat with the most credibility on foreign policy, and he has shown he is not afraid to go up against the Republicans on the Sunday news shows. He is a fighter. And if he decides to run, he will be a very competitive candidate, and if troops are still dying in Iraq (God forbid) daily, he has as good as chance as anyone. So sign me up for a trip to Iowa for Biden in the winter of 2007/08.

a new poll has Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison leading Governor Rick Perry in a hypothetical matchup in the 2006 Republican governor primary by an amazing 59.5% to 31.6%. But there is some good news for Governor Goodhair: he leads both Comptroller Carol Strayhorn and former Bush Yes Man (I mean Sec of Commerce) Don Evans. He leads Strayhorn 56 to 29.7 and Evans 59.3 to 19.6.

Personally, I am surprised Evans is doing as well as he is with such low name i.d. I expect Perry to be challenged for sure, and it could be by all three of them, though that would be close to insanity.

Now, if we could only find a Democratic candidate ... (no, I'm not looking at you, Mr. Sanchez ... )

Frost Officially Declares for DNC Chair

Martin Frost's congressional office just issued a press release today confirming that he is running for DNC Chair. The best part:

"In response to requests from numerous Democratic leaders across the country to run for Democratic National Committee Chair ... "

DNC Chair Outlook

Jerome over at MyDD has a great post on this as well, but I will offer my two cents as well.

From where it stands right now, there really is no front runner. A Hotline poll a few weeks ago showed Dean with 47%. But, from what I understand, you need a majority to win. At the time, when Vilsack was still in, he was #2. Now, of course, he is out, and there are other candidates trying to pick up the anti-Dean movement.

The most ardent anti-Dean is probably Martin Frost. I really don't think its a good idea to elect a DNC Chair who lost to Pete Sessions on November 2 by twenty points. Frost is a moderate who already lost to Pelosi for minority leader a few years ago. He is not the future of the party. We should urge Frost to continue to be involved in Democratic politics, but it shouldn't be as DNC Chair. He has not shown the leadership, the organizational skills or the vision to do so.

My three favorite candidates are Howard Dean, Donnie Fowler and Simon Rosenberg. Rosenberg recently picked up a warm endorsement for second choice (behind Dean) from DailyKos. Dean is the overwhelming favorite of the net roots, but we will have to see how that works out. Fowler has the rhetoric (and some damn good ideas) but does he have the name I.D. neccesary? No one knows who the hell McAullife is, but maybe that's part of the problem. Do we need a more vocal and recognizable chair? If so, the choice is probably Howard Dean, though the prospect of a Dean-Rosenberg split (which has been gossiped about) is intriguing.

Lincoln Chafee, the most likely GOP senator to pull a Jeffords and switch to independent or D (though he insists he won't), says that after returning from Iraq recently he has concluded that it has gotten worse in the last year and that it was "frightening at times." Well, with all due respect Senator (and I do respect this guy, though not for his ridiculously blind party loyalty, if in name only), but everyone with half a brain knows that ... right, I forgot, that doesn't include 54 of your senate colleagues. A few thoughts on 2008

I've been thinking a lot about the future lately. With all the shit going on right now, its pretty hard not to, actually. In 2008, it will have been 12 years since a Democrat won the White House. If we lose 2008, we are in trouble, since it won't be an open seat for another eight years. I've thought about the candidates; who I could see myself supporting, and I've come to the early conclusion of two candidates who would make me proud. Of course, people like Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson and John Kerry and John Edwards are heroes of mine, but I don't really see them as our nominee in 2008.

The candidates who I have decided on (albeit rather prematurely) are Mark Warner and Wes Clark. Both of these men are strong leaders: Warner with experience in the private sector and as Governor of Virginia, and of course Clark as a four-star general and war hero. Clark is also deceptively liberal, and is much more progressive on social issues than most people would think. Warner brings back shades of Howard Dean in that he is a fiscal conservative who had to make tough decisions as governor. Warner's tough decisions have involved taxes, but it would be hard for that to really be used against him in a campaign, at least not to the extent they used Kerry's so called "tax and spend" liberalness against him.

Some forward thinking souls already have a Draft Mark Warner site up ... haven't heard about anything specific about Clark, but I'm sure there is a Yahoo group at least. By the way, posting will become more regular from now on. I have been in a post-election blues as of late, to say the least.

Statesman endores Bush

Well, at least we know who the journalistic whores are now. I'm canceling my subscription. I'll take the Waco Tribune-Herald, the Austin Chronicle and the Lone Star Iconoclast from now on. All of them endorsed Kerry, proving their grasp on reality is more than the fleeting one the Statesman seems to have. If you want to send them a letter, telling them how wrong Bush is for America, go ahead. You can bet I will.

Austin-American Statesman Endorses Bush

I guess it was expected since they endorsed him in 2000, but I always hold out hope that newspaper people -- the ones who are supposed to be paying attention to the news -- will make the right -- and in this case, the only truly reasonable -- choice. But, as bad as it is to endorse Bush, this has got to be the most half-assed endorsement I've ever seen. They call on Bush to get rid of Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz . . like that's gonna happen. Basically, the Statesman endorses Bush but doesn't really endorse any of his programs, saying we should put a "brake" on the tax cuts. Well, at least we know who the journalistic whores are know. I'm canceling my subscription. From now on, I'll get my news from the Waco Tribune-Herald (which endorsed Kerry today), The Austin Chronicle (old reliable) and, oh yeah, The Lone Star Iconoclast (Bushie's hometown paper, endorsed Kerry). Book of the Week: "Dreams From My Father" by Barack Obama

Maybe not now. Maybe not until November 3. But sometime soon, you need to go out and buy Barack Obama's memoir, published about ten years ago, Dreams From My Father. It is nothing short of a great book. I bought it right after Obama kicked ass at the convention in July. But as I began it expecting a decent read, I was treated to one of the better books I've read in the last year. Obama's conflicted past is evident on every page, as he struggles to find his identity. Throug his days as a child in Hawaii and Indonesia, to his early adult life as a community organizer in Chicago, you learn what Obama learned. And then some. At its core, it is a tale of a father and his son. They never knew each other well, but the effect Barack Sr. had on his child is clear. Also, the new edition has a solid new foreword by Obama, as he describes his race for the senate as "anything but a sure thing." Obviously, that was pre-Ryan's demise and pre-the re-revelation that Alan Keyes is indeed insane. To order from BN, click here.

Right now, John McCain is speaking. I have always liked and respected McCain. But he just called out Michael Moore in the middle of his speech and, like the kind and gentle soles they are, the delegates booed Moore for what seemed like several minutes. If McCain's speech is the message of the GOP, they won't win. IT is soft, it is negative and it is plain wrong. Iraq was wrong. If I was them, I would move on, not dwell on what has become a 21st century quagmire. But, like I said, I like and respect McCain, because he is a conservative with a conscience, unlike top GOP leaders like Tom DeLay. Why won't the GOP show its real face? The Letdown of the Colorado Primary

Too bad. Pete Coors, or "the beer selling bigot" as I like to refer to him as, has beaten Bob Schaffer, a far right conservative fomer congressman, with about 60% of the vote. Results here. On the Democratic side, Attorney General and establishment pick Ken Salazar prevailed easily over first time candidate, former Marine and progressive activist favorite Mike Miles. Miles is a great guy, a great candidate and I hope to see him run for something again very soon. We need people like him in government. The bad news of the night, of course, is Coors winning. Coors, in some crazy mixed-up world that I don't understand, is actually considered the moderate in the race. Yep, Coors -- that gay bashing, beer seller -- is considered the moderate. Guess that says a lot about Schaffer. Bottom line: Schaffer vs. Salazar would have been a cakewalk. Coors vs. Salazar is another story. Salazar is still the favorite, but it will be a very tough race.

More primary news . . . In Georgia, Democratic voters picked Denise Majette, an African-American congresswoman, as their nominee. She easily topped businessman Cliff Oxford in the runoff. Majette still faces, to put it nicely, an uphill battle against Congressman Johnny Isakson to reclaim Zell the Traitor's seat back for the Democrats. But it is possible.

More Partisan Bullshit

Will it ever stop? There are certain institutions that should be exempt from partisan politics. The Director of Central Intelligence is one of them. Or was. Until now. Bush (the waffle) has tapped Congressman Porter Goss of Florida to head the Agency. Goss is qualified in many aspects, having served as a CIA agent for a few years. But, in this day and age, we don't need a GOP congressman, we need a man who knows how to run the Agency. Furthermore, Goss has been Chairman of the House Intelligence during the last 7 years, under which intelligence in America has failed. In short, Goss has been a failure. Many people think that, aside from George Tenet, Goss had more control over the CIA (especially its budget) than any single man in government. Some even say he was more powerful than Tenet. However, Bush let Tenet, a Clinton appointee who had served well as Director, take the fall. Now, its more partisan bullshit. I, for one, am tired of this. Let's elect John Kerry and put an end to it.

Well, I guess there is such a thing as karma. This morning, all of the staff of Congressman Rodney Alexander (you know, the so-called Democrat who switched to the GOP to be The Hammer's go and fetch it boy) quit. That's right, this via DailyKos, all of them. The DCCC, along with dozens of House Democrats, are demanding Alexander return the money they gave him. In all, it reportedly adds up to $70,000. That would be nice to get it back, especially since we have a legitimate and worthy candidate running against the Turncoat du Jour. The website, which is currently not operational, is www.blakesforcongress.com. But, though Alexander has betrayed us in real life, his webpage tells a different story. As of the early hours of Tuesday morning, this is from his campaign site bio:

"Rodney, a pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment Democrat, is an active member of the Blue Dog Coalition, and serves as a conservative voice in the Democratic Party in Congress. Don't Mess with Edwards

This is a message to all Republicans: Don't Mess with John Edwards. Please . . . its getting annoying. First, don't call him unexperienced in foreign policy. I mean really. Look at Bush (the waffle). His foreign policy and national security experiene, prior to being our noble C-i-C, was six horrible years as Governor in which he commanded the Texas National Guard. In Edwards' six distinguished years in the U.S. Senate, two of them as his state's senior Senator, Edwards has served on the Senate Intelligence Committee and put forth bold and daring ideas for reforming the intelligence agencies. Bush flip flops on what kind of intelligence he wants. As we all know, just like the August 6 Presidential Daily Breifing that warned that bin Laden was "determined to strike U.S.", Bush doesn't really even listen to intelligence, even when its reliable. So get off Edwards' back. He has served six good years in the senate, and a lifetime of committment to making peoples' lives better. If only the GOP could say the same for Bush, who led Texas into the toilet during his six years (and Texas Guv is the weakest Governorship in the US, hardly a training ground of President). Its time to stand up to the GOP. We're gonna win this thing.

Barack Obama Visits Austin

On Thursday, Democratic star and, barring an Alan Keyes' miracle, the next Senator from the state of Illinois, Barack Obama, came to Austin to raise money for his already loaded (over $10 million) campaign. Obama made appearances at two events hosted in his honor. One was at the Four Seasons Hotel, the other was at former Texas Land Commissioner and 1998 Democratic nominee for Governor Garry Mauro's house. The Mauro event was attended by more than 700 people. That is an amazing acheivement, and all those involved deserve to be recognized for the great attendance. But, the truth is, we could use the money here in Austin. Glen Maxey, former state Rep and Dean for Texas State Coordinator, is running the Travis County Coordinated Campaign. There calling it Austin for Change, and the website is up and running. I walked onto my airplane today and I saw an eldetly woman sitting by herself and I sat down. She was wearing a Kerry/Edwards button, and as I sat down I said, "I like your button." She smiled and said, "Please, take it. I carry around twenty at a time to hand out to people who want them." I took it and put it on as she told me of taking 100 buttons with her when she saw Fahrenheit 9/11, and being bombarded afterwards with people who wanted them. This is good. In fact, this is great. We are united. We are going to beat The True Flip Flopper, I can feel it. Potential Candidates for 2006

Senator: Houston trial laywer Barbara Radnofsky has already formed an exploratory committee and has, according to her, raised $90,000 (though she also said she has spent $45,000). 2002 nominee Ron Kirk could give another try, and many in the State Party are still partial to the dream they had for him just two short years ago. He would have made a great senator. Jim Turner, a Congressman from Crockett who has been redistricted out of his seat, has already said he will probably run for either Governor or Senator. Which one will it be? Time will tell.

Governor: There are rumors around that Tony Sanchez wants to try again. His presence at the state convention in June hints towards that as well. I think he would have trouble getting out of a primary after his showing against Governor Goodhair in 2002. Houston Congressman and attacker de The Hammer Chris Bell has told some friends (including Radnofsky) that he is leaning towards running for Governor. Bell has also been reportedly interested in Attorney General, after losing the March Primary to Al Green following the re-redistricting. Will John Sharp run again? I think so, but not for Governor. Some think he is the best candidate, but I'm not convinced. Other potential candidates for Governor include Austin adman Roy Spence, former Austin mayor Kirk Watson, 1998 Gubernatorial nominee Garry Mauro, former Congressman Ken Bentsen and one of the men who has yet to lose their congressional seats: Max Sandlin, Martin Frost, Charlie Stenholm and Chet Edwards the most attractive candidates of the five (excluding Lampson).

Some Republicans Piss Me Off

I just got done talking to a friend of mine (more of an acquaintance actually) who is a staunch conservative. He told me that John Edwards is a "fake Southerner" and that Barack Obama is the latest line of "race baiters" and just adds to "the urban myth." How wrong he is. How can a Republican, in all seriousness, accuse John Edwards of being a "fake Southerner" when Mr. GOP himself (you know, that Miserable Failure and waffler) . . . George W. Bush . . . who claims to be the quintessential Texan as he retreats to his ranch to "clear brush." Well, listen up kids, George W. Bush was born in New Haven, graduated from high school at a New England prep school and went to college at Yale and then went to Harvard Business School. I know a lot of Texans, but I don't know any like George W. Bush. So when you say "GO BACK TO CRAWFORD!", you should be saying "GO BACK TO CONNECTICUTT", because God knows we don't need him here in the Lone Star State (we have enough extremists like The Hammer and Goodhair). Finally, how is Barack Obama a "race baiter?" He gave a passionate speech about building "one America" and spoke of the common ground found between the Red States and Blue States. Al Sharpton? Sure, he, at times, might be a "race baiter." Jesse Jackson? Perhaps. But not Barack Obama. I repeat, NOT Barack Obama. We can't put up with this bullshit. We have great candidates and a great message: HOPE IS ON THE WAY! We cannot let people like my friend (the one who calls Edwards a fake southerner and Obama a race baiter) spread their falsehoods and just plain lies. Its our turn to take back America. Sharpton rebuts Bush's remarks at Urban League

Al Sharpton, a man feared by some fellow Democrats, gave a fiery speech today at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Sharpton gave a heated response to President Bush's (aka Worst President Ever / Waffle) remarks last week at the National Urban League when Bush said the African-American community would have more political leverage if it evenly supported both parties. Sharpton replied that the Civil Rights Act was passed under a Democrat, the Voting Rights Act was passed by a Democrat and many other great legislation has been passed under Democrats. African-Americans have always been there for Democrats, but so have the Democrats always been there for the African-American community, and so we shall continue, because it is the right thing to do. Sharpton gave a 20 minute speech, going 14 minutes over his alloted 6 minutes. Its time to get ready for the long haul . . . register voters, contribute to John Kerry, the DCCC, the DSCC, the DNC, your favorite local candidate or one of the candidates at ACTBlue (see side panel for my reccomendations). In the words of Howard Dean, its time we took our country back! Let's work together and make that dream a reality!

The Most Important Days Are To Come

The first two days of the Democratic Convention are over, but the two most important are remaining. On The Daily Show with Jon Stewart tonight, Governor Bill Richardson (D-N.M.) said that Tuesday was a buildup after a firstday that had the Clintons, Al Gore and Jimmy Carter and the final two days that will be an Edwards Day and a Kerry Day. The next two days could decide whether we Democrats leave this convention with a 8 point lead or a 15 point lead. Let's hope Bob Shrum and the Kerry team have been working overtime to write a speech that will speak to the American people like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama already have. Obama Inspires

Barack Obama inspires me, perhaps more than any other politician in the world. He is the star of the Democratic Party and, tonight, he did well. Very well. His keynote speech was just right. With people like him in the Senate, I will feel better knowing he, along with other great senators like Ted Kennedy (who also gave a great speech tonight), Joe Biden (speaks tomorrow and was on The Daily Show tonight, and will be rerun in 13 minutes!), Hillary Clinton and the rest of the senators who stand up for real Americans, will be able to stand up to the right wing idealogues like Rick Santorum, who bring shame to the United State Senate.

First Night of Convention

By now, we all should have known what Bill Clinton was capable of. I guess four years of an Idiot will make you appreciate a guy who knows WTF he is talking about. Luckily, Kerry knows stuff, too. Anyway, President Clinton did awesome in his speech, and hopefully it will motivate everyone in Our Party, as well as Independents and common sense Republicans (yes, there are a few of them left), to vote for Kerry/Edwards and the Democrats in November. President Al Gore also gave a great speech. He is a great man, and its hard to imagine how great America would be doing if Florida knew how to count all the votes. President Jimmy Carter also did a very nuanced speech, speaking from his heart and the Christian values that define him. I can't understand why people dislike President Carter, a man who used his position of President to do so many great things for people once his term was over. Congressman Bob Menendez of New Jersey also gave a pretty good speech, as did Texas Congressman Jim Turner, who has said he will probably run for either U.S. Senator or Governor in 2006.

Texas State Rep Dems Kick GOP Ass in Fundraising!

The journey to Take Back Texas has begun! Democratic candidates have outraised their Republican counterparts $1,012,581.38 to $646,440.99 in the ten races profiled (taken from BOR). That is huge, and it is something that we didn't have in 2002 when Tom DeLay was laundering money to GOP candidates like Jack Stick and Todd Baxter, both of whom have strong Democratic opponents in Mark Strama and Kelly White. Perhaps most impressive is Democrat incumbent Patrick Rose, who has over half a million dollars on hand. Rose is profiled in the wonderful documentary Last Man Standing, which has been on PBS recenty. Below our the matchups -- and the numbers -- that will help us Take Back Texas:
